Résumé

Intended for anyone attempting to find their way through the large and confusingly interwoven literature on consciousness, this reader brings together most of the principal theoretical works in philosophy and neuropsychology on consciousness. Its extensive coverage strikes a careful balance between seminal works of the past few decades and the leading edge of philosophical research on consciousness.
Unlike any other anthology, The Nature of Consciousness comes with a substantial introduction that imposes structure on a vast and complicated literature, provides a rich theoretical framework, and locates the contemporary debates in their historical context. The forty-nine contributions are presented in ten sections : stream of consciousness ; consciousness, science and methodology, the psychology and neuropsychology of consciousness ; consciousness and content ; function of consciousness ; metaphysics of consciousness ; subjectivity and explanatory gap ; the knowledge argument ; qualia ; and high-order monitoring conceptions of consciousness.
Synopses of the chapters are included in the preface. The book also provides a list of further readings.
