La mission française de Qal'at Sem'an, dirigée par J.-P. Sodoni, a étudié certains secteurs du complexe de pèlerinage au cours de campagne menées de 1980 à 1994. Il s'agissait de compléter les travaux qui avaient déjàété entrepris par Georges Tchalenko sous le mandat français et par les autorités syriennes. Les secteurs choisis ont été la porte principale d'accès, le baptistère, le martyrium cruciforme et le soubassement de la basilique ouest.
Les objets métalliques (en fer et en alliage cuivreux), étudiés par Michel Kazanski, viennent essentiellement du secteur de la porte principale, du baptistère et de la basilique ouest. Un certain nombre d'objets, trouvés par G. Tchalenko et le service syrien des Antiquités, a été joint aux objets trouvés lors des fouilles de 1980-1994. La collection étudiée va de la période proto-byzantine à l'époque ottomane.
Elle contient des armes, des outils, des objets de la vie quotidienne, des éléments vestimentaires etc. Trois études, consacrés aux parures et accessoires vestimentaires - plaques-boucles du VIe-IXe siècle (M. Kazanski), fibules cruciformes romaines (V. Soupault-Becquelin), bracelet mamelouk (S. Boulogne) - complètent ce volume. Sodini, present the research undertaken on certain sectors of the pilgrimage complex excavated over the course of the 1980-94 seasons. The purpose is to complete the work already undertaken by Georges Tchalenko during the French Mandate and by the Syrian authorities. The sectors choen were the principal access gate, the baptistery, the cruciform martyrium, and the foundation of the West basilica. The metal artifacts (iron and copper alloy) were studied by Michael Kazanski; they derive essentially from the principal gate, baptistery, and West basilica sectors.
A certain number of artifacts found by Georges Tchalenko and by the Syrian Department of Antiquities were included along with those found during the 1980-94 excavations. The corpus studied covers a span of time from the Proto-Byzantine period until the Ottoman era; it includes weapons, tools, objects from daily life, clothing accessories, etc. Three studies dedicated to jewellery and clothing accessories complete the volume: belt buckles from the 6th-9th centuries (M.
Kazanski), cruciform Roman fibulae (V. Soupault-Becquelin), and a Mamluk bracelet (S. Boulogne).
