We live in troubled times. At the heart of this world lies the prison. In Ben Okri's most significant novel since The Famished Road, a young woman is arrested without warning by agents of the state, and disappears. Nobody knows why she's been taken, or even whether she's alive. When the knock comes, the woman is talking with her lover. It is an ordinary evening, but some of the things she is saying worry him.
After her arrest the lover begins to search for her, tentatively at first and then with increasing desperation.
