Résumé

In the course of fifteen brilliant short stories, Dubliners unfolds a minute and fascinating portrait of the Irish capital at the turn of the century, in that devastated period between the death of the political leader Charles Stewart Parnell and the eventual achievement of Irish independence in 1921. Written between 1904 and 1907, when Joyce was in his early twenties, these stories contain all the subtlety, symbolic density and sensitivity to language that were to establish James Joyce's reputation as the pre-eminent modernist. A full biographical and critical introduction and a variety of questions and activities enable students to make a thorough analytical study of the book. The text includes numerous footnotes and provides phonetic transcriptions of some difficult words. An accompanying cassette contains four complete stories. A separate Teacher's Book is also available.
