Résumé

This aerial tour over France is tantamount to a fantastic journey in time and space. The great variety of the French landscape reflects not only the nations rich history, but its immense natural beauty as well. Within the French interior lies a vast network of rivers and streams. It is along the banks of these rivers that the great centers of France, rich with splendid historical buildings, grew up: not only Paris on the Seine, but the Loire Valley. This "garden of France," the heart of the French Renaissance, features the fabulous royal chateaux, such as Chambord and Chenonceau. The valley of the Garonne offers similar treasures in the southwest. And finally, the link between the regions of the north and the Midi, from Lyons to Marseilles, is the Rhône Valley, one of the most historic areas in France. We proceed to the coasts: the lofty cliffs of Etreat in upper Normandy and of Cap Fréhel in Britanny, the immense bay of Mont-Saint-Michel, the rocky coves of the Armorican coast, the vast beaches backed by pinewoods on the Atlantic, the steep Calanques of Marseilles and Cassis, the lagoons and salt flats of the Camargue... And from Saint-Raphaël to Menton in an explosion of colors dominated by the reddish-purple of the rocks, the green of the luxuriant vegetation, and the deep blue of the sea, extends the string of enchanting, sun-drenched seaside resorts known as the Côte d'Azur. And lets not forget Corsica. Its nickname - the Île de Beauté - says it all. Add to all these riches, the splendid mountain landscapes of the Alps and the Pyrenees and the gentler delights of the Jura, the Massif Central, and the Vosges. What better way to capture the history and spirit of the land than this collection of stunning aerial photographs. France from the Air is the best possible tribute to one of the most beloved countries of the world.
