Throughout the novel, I really hesitated between 3 out of 5 or 4 out of 5.
I loved Major Pettigrew dry sense of humor, and almost never at loss with words! He's the one to have really shaped the book. I liked Mrs. Ali, but she wasn't developed enough as a character to love her, and the same thing goes for Amina. And Major Pettigrew and Mrs. Ali's relation was sweet and just what it needed to be.
I hated most of the other characters, all those so-called "civilized" people yet so prejudiced and close-minded made me more than once want to put the book down. Major's son also annoyed me quite deeply
throughout the book.
I enjoyed it, easy read, but the prejudices about otherness turned into hostility and passive aggression made me want to go in the book, slap them all and just throw (metaphorically speaking of course) the book away.
