Résumé

Falcon Scott, he was spellbound. The seed was sown and less than twenty years later Avery was organising his own expedition to celebrate the centenary of his childhood hero's first attempt to reach the South Pole. On 28th December 2002 Avery walked into the record books himself by becoming the youngest Briton to complete the perilous journey, his team the fastest in history to do so. Written in diary form, Pole Dance chronicles the entire, amazing journey, from a fall into a crevasse which Avery was lucky to survive, to the near-disasters and ultimate triumphs over the harshest conditions on the planet. It also explores the changes in polar travel since the days of Scott and Shackleton, and is a chilling reminder of the power and danger of the natural world, and the heroism of those who challenge it.

À propos de l'auteur

Biographie de Tom Avery

Tom Avery was born in 1975 and brought up in Sussex, Brazil and France. After graduating from Bristol University with a B. Sc. in geography and geology, he had a brief career in the City before working for a small Swiss ski business. He has organised and led expeditions to the South American Andes, the French Alps, Tanzania, Morocco and New Zealand, but the highlight of his climbing career to date took place in 2000 when he led a pioneering British expedition to the previously unexplored Eastern Zaalay Mountains of Central Asia. The Commonwealth South Pole Centenary Expedition is the ninth major expedition that he has organised. Tom Avery now spends his time giving motivational talks to businesses, raising funds for The Princes Trust (for whom he is an ambassador). He has just returned from a pioneering dog sledging expedition in the Arctic which recreated Commander Robert Peary's disputed journey to the North Pole of 1909. He is also an official ambassador for the 2012 London Games, and a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society. Visit his website at www.tomaverynet.
