His parents were Ser Piero, a legal official, and Caterina, a peasant. His father brought Da Vinci, who was born out of wedlock, into his home, when he was three. Like any apprentice, he needed to perform necessary errands at first, nearly as a servant would. Da Vinci went to the Senate of Venice and volunteered to become an engineer. He wanted to build a dam that would permit Venetian powers to bring the Turks into the Isonzo river valley to flood the gateway, effectively annihilating the enemy's forces. On the other hand, his last painting, Saint John the Baptist, was completed in Rome, but it is one of the least well-known.
