My First Summer in the Winter Months is about a black woman's personal experience on a holiday in the country of her parents' birthplace in Jamaica. This was the author's first experience of having an extended holiday in the winter months in a country where it was summer.  On this holiday a lot of lessons were learned, and unexpected experiences and insights came about naturally from within the environment.
 This short story highlights how anyone can experience joy on a short holiday if they are mindful of their environment, and if they are willing to be open to experiences as they come up.  The exciting aspect is that by going on this journey and being open-minded in a third-world country you will get a rich experience with some profound insights.  You can use this reflection in your life, coming from the Western world we often feel trapped and depressed with a whole host of emotions.
 Going on a journey to a third-world country frees you from these feelings, as you now have a comparison.   If you were ungrateful before travelling you will go back to your country of origin even more grateful, and you will see life with a totally new paradigm shift. The most important lesson learned was the importance of having a break from the Western world and seeing how you could feel once you were out of that environment the experience was life-changing.
 A place to go and have undistracted thoughts and to be able to think on a higher level than you have ever been able to think of before in your life. The target audience for this book I would consider the age group to be 18+, although this book is tailored to women, I feel that it would suit both males and females. This book will deeply resonate with travel enthusiasts people who are hoping to make some small changes in their lives, and others who are seeking new life experiences outside of their normal life.
