We have summarized here the essential of this book by the author. PROPERTY AND DISTRIBUTION OF THE LAND IN ARGENTINAEveryone aspires and has faith in land ownershipThe conquerors arrived at the mouth of the Río de la Plata in search of the long-awaited precious metals, but without having the luck of finding them. They sought compensation for their failure by exercising a virtual monopoly over land.
The ancestors of the main farmers in the country arrived when the land was already distributed. Consequently, we can say that the large number of tenants come from families that never owned land. They are immigrants or their children who began farming as laborers and rose to the status of tenants. In Europe they were small owners but in Argentina they started as peons. For most of the first three centuries after the arrival of the Spanish, the land did not generate economic rewards.
The expedition leaders came from a country where those at the top of the social pyramid were the owners of large tracts of land. In 1937, most of the agricultural land was distributed in large properties, their owners being the most prestigious citizens of the country. This was the case for almost the entire history of the country.
