Résumé

From great churches and temples, to statues, weapons and artifacts, this is the story of Dan Cruickshank's travels in pursuit of the most famous, and infamous, man-made treasures in the world. Whether standing before the solemn heads of Easter Island, climbing Machu Picchu or the magnificent temple of Borobudur in java, contemplating the Ryoanji Temple garden in Kyoto or the pleasure palace at Sigiriya in Sri Lanka, Dan tells us about the origins, construction, mysteries and years of glory of each of these monuments to the great civilisations of the world. Each treasure has a part to play in this story of human endeavour. Does it live up to expectations ? Has it been left in ruin, ransacked or even over-restored ? Around the World in 80 Treasures tells the fascinating story of civilisation through the greatest of man's achievements.
