Résumé

The feed sector in the EU has been affected by several crises such as BSE, dioxin contamination, GMO and safeguard clauses generated by countries that are against the use of antimicrobials as performance enhancers. At the time of the celebration of the 3e Conference of Feed Manufacturing in the Mediterranean Region, whose proceedings are presented in this publication, the issue of most current interest was that of the use of antibiotics.
The EU Commission has banned or suspended the authorization of five antibiotics since 1997. The consumer conceives the antibiotic ban as an improvement. The prohibition is building a new strategy, which will be closer to the green trend and the current economic and political movement. However, this movement will enhance and increment the cost of the control of sub-clinical diseases and other problems of residuals.
In conclusion, the ban on the use of antimicrobials as feed additives will have a significant impact on livestock producers.
