Gustave Flaubert is one of the undisputed masters of nineteenth-century fiction. A writer of remarkable narrative skill, profound psychological understanding and incredible sensitivity to detail, Flaubert nevertheless was initially decried by the French public, and Madame Bovary, his first published work, was deemed an outrage to public morality. Together with Madame Bovary, he is now most famous for L'Éducation Sentimentale, of which Memoirs of a Madman is his earliest draft.
