Résumé

Like in the past the towers of the cathedrals, skyscrapers became the defining features of city scapes with the advent of the 20 th century. Since the turn of the millenium they are again among the most prestigious and coveted architectural challenges. The design freedom of contours and the plastic freedom of contours and the plastic volume of blobs have long since superseded the purely orthogonal towers of the past.
In addition to the key projects of this remarkable skyscraper renaissance, this volume presents the most spectacular towers still under construction as well as future-oriented experimental designs. Most current projects are being implemented in the Arab-Asian realm, such as the Burj Khalifa in Dubai by Som, the world's highest building. At the same time, in the USA, the native home of skyscrapers, new towers are also under construction, such as the Hearst Tower in New York by Foster + Partners.
In Europe also, buildings are reaching for the sky, such as the Turning Torso in The Swedish city of Malmö by Santiago Calatrava.
