Drawing on the Israel Museum's rich collection of Jewish
dress, the largest of its kind worldwide, this colorful volume
explores aspects of Jewish identity: integration and
segregation; tradition, transition, and innovation. Written for a
broad audience, the book addresses such general issues as the
impact of widespread migration, as well as specific questions
like the ritual requirements that determine special garments.
This presentation of the collection, illuminated by in-depth
research, reveals the diversity of pre-modern Jewish attire and
documents the dress traditions of many different communities.
Lavish pictures of garments are juxtaposed with rare
contextual photographs from the Museum's archive, attesting
to individual and communal taste and also offering a source of
inspiration for fashion designers today.
Joining these images
to detailed texts, The Jewish Wardrobe will serve as a lasting
resource for scholars and enthusiasts alike.
