The villagers discover that they have a surprising urge to cooperate with this stranger but their help will not save Black as he discovers the nature of the evil concealed in Settle's Crossways. The Augur's Gambit. Mayhew Gordian, Hieronomer to the Queen of Indemnie, is a reader of entrails, an augur, and the same message keeps appearing : Indemnie is doomed.
Loyal to his beautiful queen, even in the face of certain destruction, a man may fight. The Augur's Gambit is his mad attempt to save a kingdom, and his own life.
