Louis Thouret is found stabbed in an alley-way off the Boulevard Saint-Martin in Paris. His wife seems strangely calm when she identifies the body and is more surprised to see that he is wearing clothes she has never seen before. As Chief Superintendent Maigret pieces together the dead man's last days, he discovers that Louis had a secret life. He left his job years ago. Somehow he had enough money to convince his conventional wife he was still working. But who would want to kill him? Especially when it seems he just spent his days sitting on a bench on the boulevard, watching the world go by...
