Résumé

When it comes to what we believe, humans are masters of self-deception. In politics, work, our personal lives, and everything in between, we see what we want to see. Acclaimed rationality expert Julia Galef calls this a soldier mindset - the drive to defend the ideas we most want to believe and shoot down those we don't. But our desire to be right can blind us, hurt our judgment and decision-making, and leave us vulnerable to risk.
It we want to get things right when it matters most, Galef argues, we must train ourselves to have a scout mindsep - to survey the territory and discover what's actually true. The Scout Mindset invites us on a tour of people who triumphed over self-deception, in contexts ranging from cryptocurrency and espionage to politics and pyramid schemes. Offering tools to test our assumptions and learn from opposing perspectives, Galef makes an undeniable case for a different way of seeing - one that's not only useful and fulfilling, but rooted in an appetite for truth.
