About the authorDr Lehlohonolo Makhanya began his career as the head of the Physical Testing Laboratory at a JSE-listed aluminium company based in Pietermaritzburg. After almost a year, in 2001 he moved to the operations side of the business, where he worked as a process engineer. Here he was responsible for process engineering at the hot rolling division, and later oversaw both the hot and cold rolling divisions.
In 2010, he moved to the company's biggest department-the finishing division-to manage operations. He is a metallurgical engineer by profession and has a PhD in strategic management from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). Among others, he also holds a master's degree in mechanical engineering from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), a master's degree in business leadership (MBL) from the University of South Africa (UNISA), and a postgraduate diploma in management (PGDiP) from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN).
Dr Makhanya is a self-motivated, energetic and adaptable professional, with a practical approach to problem solving and a drive to see things through to completion. A staunch believer in focusing on people to make organisations succeed, he enjoys overcoming challenges and has a genuine interest in business leadership.
