Résumé

Produced upon the initiative of the French Ministry of the Environment (water resources department), this book was written by Cemagref, under the guidance of, and with contributions, from a working group. This technical handbook is intended for the engineers and technicians of companies, local authorities or organisations involved in the management of dikes for flood protection. Its aim is to increase understanding of : How dike systems work, The risks faced (failure mechanisms), Surveillance and maintenance operations.
It also aims to describe and explain the work to be done to ensure the long-term ability and safety of such structures, in view of water resource and flood prevention legislation in France. Although the principles of civil engineering maintenance and diagnosis described herein were developed in the French context, they may be applied with confidence to flood protection dikes and levees in other countries around the world.
