For the US Pavilion at the 1958 Brussel's World's Fair, artist Saul Steinberg created The Americans, a monumental mural-collage consisting of eight panels which present a panorama of everyday life in America. Largely forgotten, the mural is being exhibited by the Museum Ludwig in its complete state for the first Lime since the Fair closed, alongside a wide range of Steinberg's contemporaneous drawings, collages, paper-bag masks, and magazine features.
This richly illustrated catalogue puts the mural in historical context as well as in the context of Steinberg's art providing insight into the extraordinary work of an artist who always crossed the boundaries between high and low art.
