Sometimes I get frustrated because I have so many ideas fighting to come out. Every painting has so many possibilities. Often there are days when I really don't want to paint, I have to paint. The urge to create is almost a wild, living entity trapped inside me, clawing to escape and leave its mark on the world." Amy Brown is, without a doubt, one of the most talented fantasy artists today. Hailing from the Pacific Northwest, she was born in Bellingham, Washington in 1972. Like most artists, she began drawing at an early age. "I was never one of those children who daydreamed of growing up to become and artist. I just assumed that was what 1 would be." It wasn't until her early twenties that she became serious about her art and began to dabble with water-colors. Despite unsolicited advice that she should paint in oils or acrylics because "watercolor artists never become successful," Amy found that watercolors had a luminous quality that lent a spark of life to the creatures she painted. After her very first faery painting sold only two days after it had been displayed in the gallery where she worked, Amy decided to delve deeper into the faery realm. Being a firm believer that "art has no rules," the expanse of possibilities involved in studying and painting faeries were too fascinating and challenging to ignore. Her art is sometimes whimsical, sometimes humorous, often dark and mysterious. Every image tells its own talc. Her greatest influences have been Brian Froud and Michael Parks. You can see the influence of these artists in her work. She bas also been inspired by the urban fantasy stories of Charles de Lint and the lovely, haunting music of Loreena McKennitt. When Amy begins a piece, she usually bas a good idea of what she wants the finished image to look like. However, by the time she actually completes the painting it has often evolved into something completely different. She starts with a blank piece of paper and begins drawing, rarely do preliminary sketches. The initial drawing can take anywhere from fifteen minutes to hours, days, months, and sometimes years.
